AstraZeneca HR Executive is Appointed to the Advisory Board of FLIC: Female Leadership Interest Council, Inc.

WESTBOROUGH, MA. -AstraZeneca’s Human Resources Director Catherine “Cathy” Latham met Deborah Penta, CEO of PENTA Communications and founder of the newly formed Female Leadership Interest Council, Inc. (FLIC), at a Corridor Nine Chamber of Commerce event where Penta was receiving an award for business and community achievement.

“I thought, this is one woman that is doing it all,” Latham said.

Penta was impressed with the work Latham was doing with the professionals at AstraZeneca through the Operations Women’s Network (OWN).  She asked Latham to be one of several women she recently invited to be on the Advisory Board of FLIC.

FLIC is a non-profit organization founded on the principles of female leadership, mentoring and the belief that when you can help someone else succeed, you personally grow and prosper. The Council’s mission is to provide educational instruction to women to assist in developing their capabilities in the business world, which will increase the likelihood that their successes will benefit the community.

“Cathy maintains a strong commitment to empowering women within her organization to become stronger leaders. She spearheads an internal network, offers human resource savvy and believes in the value of continuous improvement and lifelong learning. These were a few attributes that made her a perfect candidate for FLIC’s advisory board,” Penta said.

Latham has served in her latest leadership role as the director of Human Resources at AstraZeneca in Westborough for the last three years.

“Being a part of the Advisory Board will allow me to do outreach within the community. I’m looking forward to getting to know other women in leadership capacities,” Latham said.

“I have always believed in continuous education and the importance of building and developing new skills.  I am passionate about leadership and the importance it plays in organizational success.   It is that passion that prompted me to study for a Master’s in Leadership,” she added.

Latham noted that when Penta asked her to be on the Board, she was thrilled.

“I thought this is right up my alley. It’s all about kismet,” she said. “I participated in a program at Simmons College on strategic leadership for women, and it was inspiring. I want to teach leadership for women. One interest I have with FLIC is to link and leverage my learning in leadership as it relates to women.”

“There is a lot of talk about the “glass ceiling” but women need to set their own goals and rely on themselves to achieve them. There needs to be individual accountability. FLIC can really help educate women about this concept,” Latham said. “Deborah was a guest speaker for the Operations Women’s Network and I saw her as a role model to other women.  She balances her work life, home, and everything so successfully.  She discussed all the demands that life can present and how to deal with them in a positive way.”

“In life, we have many choices,” Penta said. “When you make the decision to have a demanding career, hold leadership positions in the community, raise a family and do a myriad of other things, you must figure out how to achieve balance so that nothing else suffers. It can be done, and women can successfully achieve this kind of balance. The solution for each woman is as unique as each woman herself. Through FLIC, we will help by presenting various life balance solutions that work, and women can pick which ones they want to try out and eventually incorporate into their lives.”

Latham added there are issues women still need to address.

“Sometimes, women can be their own worst enemies and they possess a “scarcity” mentality.  Meaning there is not enough “room” in the world for all of us to be successful,” she said. “Women need to realize there’s more than enough “opportunity” to go around. I think women have to realize that they don’t have to be “perfect” at everything – perfect mother, worker, colleague, etc.  First of all, there is no such thing as perfect and secondly, you run the risk of “burn-out” trying to achieve the unachievable.”

Penta added, “I believe that we should strive to achieve a level of excellence and define what excellence means for each of us individually. Perfection doesn’t exist because we are forever changing and growing every single day. Life is school, and as we continue to live in it, we continue to learn.”

“I think there is a tremendous need for an organization like FLIC to drive our future leaders,” Latham said. “I am thrilled to be a part of FLIC.”
