FLIC Appoints First Male Advisory Board Member to Join the Ranks of Its Impressive Leadership

WESTBOROUGH, MA. _ At this time of the year, accountants and CPA firms are in high gear preparing for that ominous April 15 tax day deadline. Someone who really feels the crunch is Joseph “Joe” Stolberg, co-founder of Stolberg, Ebbeling & Blanchette, LLP, a CPA firm located in Worcester. However, that did not deter him from recently accepting an appointment to the Female Leadership Interest Council (FLIC) Advisory Board as the Treasurer, led by Deborah Penta, CEO and founder.

FLIC is a non-profit organization founded on the principles of female leadership, mentoring and the belief that when you can help someone else succeed, you personally grow and prosper. The Council’s mission is to provide educational instruction to women to assist in developing their capabilities in the business world, which will increase the likelihood that their successes will benefit the community.

“I think an organization like FLIC is really necessary to help women in this area,” Stolberg said. “There is a need for advocacy for women striving to reach success in high-level management environments, and we need to spur development in this area. Clearly there is a need for this.”

Stolberg has seen this lack of female recognition and promotion in his profession, one dominated by men. He has been in the public accounting arena since graduating from Babson College with a business degree in accounting, and a concentration in economics. He served in the audit department of Ernst & Young, LLP in Boston, was a partner at Carlin, Charron & Rosen, LLP and launched his own CPA firm four years ago.

According to Stolberg, the type of profession he works in does not have many women in upper management.

“The world of accounting and finance is a tough profession for all and even tougher for women who have to balance so many priorities,” he said. “I have personally witnessed the difficulties women CPA’s have in not reaching Partner ranks because of all the life balancing issues they encounter. This is a real issue.”

Stolberg said his firm does not work in the public sector, but specializes in working with privately held companies. “Most of our client companies businesses are led by men,” he said. “Very infrequently are there female leaders at the helm of client organizations and at CPA firms. By being a part of FLIC, I hope to help be an advocate and make a difference.”

“I’ve been a longtime friend and business colleague of Deborah Penta and when she shared her vision with me, I offered to help her with the accounting and finance management (for FLIC). There was absolutely no hesitation to help her reach her objectives and provide the expertise she wanted for her organization. I have a lot of business colleagues and friends who are women and I feel that FLIC will help and inspire many,” he said.

“Joe will be a great asset to our Board and to our organization. We’ve worked together for many years and have a great relationship built on trust and shared values. His keen understanding of our vision and his dedication to helping us through advocacy will inspire other men to step up to the plate and help,” Penta said. “Through his professional expertise, we will achieve, what I hope will be rock solid financial stability for our organization.”

Stolberg believes that FLIC can also help address issues in the future through lobbying and legislation.

“The political arena is an area that needs help and I think that’s an area I could help in,” he continued. “From my perspective, we need to help fight the big battle not a lot of little ones.”

Stolberg has a vast array of non-profit experience having served on the Advisory Board for the Center for Women Enterprise in a consultative capacity and offering several training programs; he is the current treasurer of the Great Brook Valley Healthcenter, treasurer and trustee of Mechanics Hall in Worcester, as well as working with the Campfire of Central New England.

“Joe brings solid accounting and finance experience and a host of nonprofit board service to FLIC. Over the years, I’ve seen him make a difference for many organizations and have seen his kind nature spend Thanksgiving Day feeding the homeless. I am very grateful for his commitment to FLIC and look forward to his involvement with our organization,” Penta said.
